Kingston, Market Place

Facing the historic market Place in Kingston-Upon-Thames and part of the overall Charter Quay regeneration development by St George plc, these three buildings are designed to both fit in and contrast, in keeping with the organic development of this market town. My strategy was to present a progression from Victorian Mock-Tudor, through Georgian to gently post-modern architecture. Above the three two-storey shop units are two floors of flats. The consultations with the Council’s Conservation and design officer was crucial in delivering both authentic design and optimal accommodation, although it is regrettable that the quatrefoils have been executed without the white centres as drawn. In-house architectural planning and design does tend to suffer from the loss of oversight once the project is on site. However in general the high quality product and commitment to excellence was typical of this particular developer.
